Birling Sod-Turning Event

March 27, 2024

A New Chapter for South West Sydney

On Monday, 25 March 2024, Cameron Brae officially marked a historic milestone with the sod-turning ceremony for Birling, a new master-planned community set to redefine residential living in Bringelly. This event, attended by key government representatives, local council members, and the Hazlett family, signified the beginning of a transformative development that will deliver thousands of new homes in Sydney’s South West Growth Corridor.

A Warm Welcome to Distinguished Guests

Paul Say, Chairman of Cameron Brae, extended a heartfelt welcome on behalf of the Hazlett family, Cameron Brae’s Board members, and the senior executive team. Among the esteemed guests were:

  • The Honourable Paul Scully, NSW Minister for Planning and Public Spaces
  • Mayor of Camden, Ashleigh Cagney
  • Camden Councillors Campbell, Dommaraju, and Fedeli
  • Mr Andrew Carfield, General Manager, Camden Council

Their presence underscored the significance of this development not only for the local community but also for the broader region as it moves into an exciting era of growth and opportunity.

Honouring a Legacy of Vision and Commitment

Cameron Brae’s journey began 50 years ago with its founder, the late David Hazlett. A man of remarkable vision and determination, David foresaw the immense potential of South West Sydney. His contributions to business, property development, and philanthropy helped shape the region’s landscape.

The sod-turning event was a moment of pride for David’s family, with his four children and twelve grandchildren in attendance. It was a testament to his enduring legacy and belief that Birling would become a benchmark in Sydney’s expansion.

A Master-Planned Community for the Future

Birling is set to deliver 2,100 homes, offering a diverse mix of lot sizes ranging from medium-density options to 1,000sqm parcels. Cameron Brae’s vision is to provide a range of housing choices at various price points, ensuring accessibility for families, first-home buyers, and investors alike.

At the heart of the development will be a central boulevard, linking a vibrant neighbourhood village to the heritage-listed Birling Homestead. The village itself will feature up to 20,000sqm of retail and commercial space, catering to the daily needs of residents and fostering a strong sense of community.

Green Spaces and Sustainable Design

A key pillar of the Birling master plan is its commitment to environmental sustainability and active lifestyles. The development will incorporate:

  • 14.5 hectares of public recreational open space, including parks and sporting fields
  • 23.5 hectares of environmental conservation, rehabilitated creeks, and drainage facilities
  • Enhancement of protected native vegetation
  • 2.5 kilometres of shared pedestrian and cycle paths, encouraging active transport

These features will create a green and connected community, offering residents ample outdoor space while maintaining a strong environmental focus.

Looking Ahead

With the first 200 homes expected to be completed by the end of 2025, Birling is on track to become a vibrant, well-integrated community within the next decade. Its proximity to the Western Sydney International Airport further cements its role as a key development in Sydney’s future growth.

As Minister Paul Scully took to the podium to share his remarks, and the ceremonial first sod was turned, the sense of anticipation and excitement was palpable. With the support of government, industry partners, and the local community, Birling is set to become a landmark in South West Sydney’s transformation.

For many years, the Hazlett family, through Cameron Brae Group, has proudly sponsored the prestigious Fisher’s Ghost Art Award, an annual celebration of artistic excellence presented by Campbelltown Arts Centre. This ongoing commitment reflects a value inspired by the late David Hazlett: to invest in the prosperity and growth of the region by supporting meaningful local initiatives. One of the highlights of that commitment is the Open Award, valued at $50,000 and acquisitive to the Campbelltown City Council Art Collection. The award sits at the heart of the long-running Festival of Fisher’s Ghost, a celebration of creativity, culture, and community that has been woven into Campbelltown’s identity for more than six decades. Honouring Local Talent and Creativity The 2025 Fisher’s Ghost Art Award attracted a record number of entries from across Western Sydney and beyond, showcasing the depth of talent and diversity within the arts community. This year’s judging panel; comprising artist and Creative Producer Eddie Abd, CEO of Murray Art Museum Albury Blair French, and Director of Parramatta Artists’ Studios Sidney McMahon, selected a body of work that reflects the technical skill, conceptual strength, and creative depth of Australia’s contemporary artists. At the Award Announcement held on Friday, 31 October 2025, Nicole Barakat was named the winner of the Open Award for her work A language for the emptiness of words. A Personal Connection For Georgina Hazlett, presenting the Open Award this year held special significance. She fondly recalls attending the awards with her father, David Hazlett, in previous years, experiences that instilled a lifelong appreciation for local creativity and community celebration. “The Fisher’s Ghost Art Award holds a special place in my heart,” said Georgina Hazlett. “Having attended these awards with my dad, I’ve seen firsthand the incredible talent and dedication of artists from our region. Each year I am inspired by the creativity on display, and it is a privilege to be part of something that brings people together through art.” Celebrating Creativity, Fostering Community Now in its 63rd year, the Fisher’s Ghost Art Award continues to be one of the most respected art prizes in New South Wales, with more than $60,000 in total prize money awarded across multiple categories from professional and emerging artists to primary and secondary students. By supporting this event year after year, the Hazlett family and Cameron Brae Group continue to champion creativity, opportunity, and community connection. We extend our warmest congratulations to Nicole Barakat on her outstanding achievement, and to all the artists whose work enriches the cultural life of our region.
