David Hazlett – founder, visionary

4 June 1945 – 2 January 2021

David Hazlett founded Cameron Brae Group over 50 years ago, which he led as CEO and Chairman until his passing. He worked tirelessly to create a property and investment business that is reflective of his loyalty, generosity of spirit and integrity.

Characteristically, David had the foresight to develop a transition plan for the Cameron Brae Group. This plan incorporated his vision to create a multi-generational family-owned business, with independent corporate direction and governance. This was implemented in recent years with the assistance of several key advisors.

The Hazlett family business success goes back to David’s father and uncle’s successful chicken breeding stock company, Dunrobin. As a young man, David was involved in the family business, a large independent producer of chicken breeding stock, eggs and meat.

In 1968, David Hazlett made his first business investment as a partner with his brother, Robert Hazlett, in the chicken breeding stock business. This business grew quickly with farms in south west Sydney and Tamworth. In 1985 the business was sold to Ingham allowing David and Robert to grow their separate businesses.

Cameron Brae Group then focused on property holdings including David’s existing holdings and others acquired as income-producing assets and land-banking. Cameron Brae Group also started to invest in the sharemarket to diversify the company’s portfolio.

The property development business started with small developments around Sydney and the South Coast in joint venture with Peter Lean, a respected developer, surveyor and long-term friend. Later, David and Arnold Vitocco created a partnership in several property holdings, the most significant of which was Emerald Hills, completed in 2022.

Cameron Brae Group also purchased Birling at Bringelly, the successful development of which remains a key component of the company’s current growth.

Cameron Brae Group's property interests expanded over time to include assets such as properties at Manly on the Corso, industrial property at Mascot, properties in Ingleburn and Campbelltown and marina facilities at Berowra Waters.

With the acquisition of the marina at Berowra Waters, Cameron Brae Group diversified into the importing and distribution of luxury boats, including Bayliner boats from the US. In 2008, the Group made a strategic decision to transition out of the boat business and focus on its core strength – property development and investment.

Over the last 55 years, hard work and sacrifices, have been the cornerstone of Cameron Brae Group's investment in the future. The Group continues to work closely with joint venture partners, stakeholders, consultants and service providers focusing on the rezoning and development of residential and commercial property in metropolitan Sydney and regional NSW. The Group undertakes developments alone, and in partnership.

Those who worked closely with David Hazlett describe him as entrepreneurial, visionary, loyal, and fast-paced. He created a thriving property development and investment group that grew with his family. He worked hard to build a business which, to this day incorporates his values of loyalty, honesty and fairness.

The corporate structure David and his family put in place in the years before his passing reflected his passion for family and was consciously established to facilitate the continuation of this family-owned business. This included a commitment by the Hazlett family to incorporate their shared values, alongside their continued stewardship of the family’s capital and legacy.

He worked closely with a group of trusted advisors, including his lawyer Mary Digiglio, accountant Malcolm Katon, property and investment advisor Paul Say and others, all of whom are Board members and continue to work with Cameron Brae Group.

"David passed away in January 2021 after a period of ill health. His powerful legacy will continue to be recognised and honoured by the Cameron Brae Group."

As a philanthropist, he supported many charitable and not-for-profit organisations including serving as a member of the board of the Ingham Institute, sponsoring Lifeline Macarthur and providing an ongoing PhD scholarship for the nursing faculty at Western Sydney University and serving as a member of the board and sponsoring the work of Liverpool Rotary Club. This commitment to the community is also continuing in the Cameron Brae Group.
